Out Now! The Fringe began in 1947 when eight theater companies showed up uninvited to the first annual Edinburgh International Festival, a performing arts festival that was started as a platform for European culture. It grew larger every year, though a decision was made early not to limit participation in the Fringe to those invited, which is the case with the New York International Fringe Festival. This year at the Edinburgh Fringe there are over 2,000 shows, with an estimated 18,000 people performing in theater, comedy, music, children's shows and dance. Last year, more than 1.5 million tickets were sold. -- Campbell Robertson, Aug. 2007

Whatever happened to the American Dream?

Strange Bedfellows - Mad Divas in association with the Impulse Company
In part two of our look at shows about America we take a peek at a very alternative reading of history; the enduring impact of one of America’s greatest cultural figures, Jack Kerouac; and a more personal account of what happens when the American Dream turns into a nightmare.
Mad Divas in association with the Impulse Company are looking to rewrite American history with their show Strange Bedfellows. Principally they want to explain some of the key events by asking some much-pondered questions. Did Lee Harvey Oswald shoot JFK because he lusted after Marilyn Monroe? Was the American Revolution caused by a lovers tiff between George Washington and King George III? Probably not, but it should make for some thought provoking theatre.
“There are some relatively serious satirical points about America,” says the director Scott Williams. “The play culminates with the case of the figure skater Tonya Harding who was involved in an attack on a fellow competitor in the 1994 US Skating Championships. Harding is shown as the epitome of the American Dream.”
“Americans are bent on getting what they want, you can be anything and anyone,” says the playwright, Stuart Spencer. “Wanting it all is a very American idea. Sometimes this is a good thing, but this ambition knows no bounds. So we started pairing significant figures in American history and explaining our history through these imaginary relationships.”
Nocturne - The Almeida Theatre
The Almeida Theatre are also looking at what it means to be American, and the concept of the American Dream, in their production of Adam Rapp’s one-man play, Nocturne. When a young man gets a letter from his dying father he is forced to return home, and confront some disturbing memories from the past, including the death of his sister.
“He returns to say goodbye to his dad, but there are no easy answers,” explains Artistic Associate of the Almeida, Jenny Worton. “There is no obvious redemption. The show is about the American Dream, but also about the theory of chaos, and living with loss. For him it’s the duality of his sister’s death and subsequent loss of music from his life. He does find some creative outlet in writing, and in literature. But again it’s not an easy or complete redemption. One does not replace the other. Having said that the ending, whilst not definite, is deliberate and offers possibility.”
Kerouac: And All That Jazz - One Off Productions
One Off Productions, by way of contrast, are looking to celebrate American culture, and in particular the effect that Jack Kerouac had on it. Their show Kerouac: And All That Jazz is timed to coincide with the Fiftieth anniversary of the publication of Kerouac’s seminal work, On The Road. But why should an English group want to celebrate an American writer?
“I remember the first publication of it,” explains the writer Barrie Wheatley. ”I remember how it influenced me, what an influence it had over here and in the US. The Beatles, Dylan, Morrissey and so many more were all influenced by his beat poetry. It’s a very authentic, and original show, with some of the guys from the period, such as Neal Cassady, Alan Ginsberg, and even Kerouac’s mother. It’s a celebration, a homage, a tribute to him as a serious writer, not as a ‘hipster’; a phrase which he himself didn’t like.”

In this year's Fringe lineup, released
yesterday, theatre companies are focusing on London's brief euphoria
between winning the 2012 Olympics and the July bombings, westerners
shopping for cosmetic surgery in Iran, the deaths of recruits at
Deepcut barracks and the thousands of Britons still living in caravans
after last year's floods.
The apparent liberation brought by social
networking websites such as Facebook and MySpace is also challenged.
Performers instead claim the digital age can be alienating, oppressive
and anti-social.
One Royal Court production, Free Outgoing, exposes the darker side of video-sharing when images of a girl having sex in a classroom spread nationwide, while the comedian Justin Moorhouse purges his electronic address book.
"I think that goes to the heart of the Fringe," said Jon Morgan, the new Fringe director. "Because it's not programmed and not curated, performers can say what they like. It's democratic and so you get a much better reflection of what's going on in the world and what issues are preoccupying performers."
Morgan was particularly struck by how strongly these themes had emerged, and in contrast to previous years is highlighting the serious theatre and comedy.
More than 31,300 performers from 47 countries will appear this August. There are 2,088 shows, up on last year's 2,050.
The 62nd Fringe festival has seen tensions over the decision by the four largest comedy venues to set up a "festival within a festival". The Gilded Balloon, Underbelly, Assembly Rooms and Pleasance have set up the Edinburgh Comedy festival, launched last night with a separate brochure and marketing effort. Stalwarts such as Clive James, Joan Rivers, Ruby Wax and Ed Byrne are due to appear but are still listed in the main Fringe programme.
In the Fringe itself, reality-based theatre is a recurrent theme. The Welsh company Sherman Cymru has used dialogue from the investigation into the deaths of soldiers at Deepcut barracks in Surrey, while Scamp Theatre uses transcripts from authentic black box flight recordings in Charlie Victor Romeo.
